lightlink
Mid 2010s, I was contacted by an old schoolmate who was working for Lightlink to maintain their networks, both physical and digital. He needed a sub. I had been working as a carpenter and was handy and afraid of nuthin’. Lightlink needed a substitute nutcase to climb radio towers and maintain their "Big Wi-Fi" equipment. I jumped at the chance to climb a 100 foot tall truss up above the tree line at night, in the dead of winter to re-terminate the coaxial cable that had gone dead.
From there I continued to work with Homer, Jane, John and Nick at Lightlink to wire up many of Ithaca's first Wi-Fi hotspots. Working for Lightlink Internet was one of the funnest craziest jobs I have ever had. I will forever miss both the people and the feeling of having climbed to the top of a radio tower in the cold dark heart of winter.
coral bay
My first trip to Coral Bay in St John US Virgin Islands was four days long, following Hurricane Irma and then Maria. The devastation across the island was hard to process---houses were reduced to wreckage and cars were in places they didn't belong. I was both in awe of the power of nature and frankly glad to have missed the main event. Recognizing that every local resident had instead been in a front row seat, I dialed expectations way down and tried to keep in mind that many people had just experienced something wildly traumatizing.
I felt both terrified and excited as I was dropped off at Bay House by the local property manager for the first time. The building itself was overall in fairly good shape. The main structure was poured concrete, and the wood framed roof was fairly substantial and miraculously had only sustained minor damage. Most of the windows and the large sliding doors leading out to the extensive deck system were blown out and almost every piece of glass in the building was broken and distributed on just about every surface. I found a broken broom and got to work sweeping broken glass off my bed and clearing debris from the winding, tiled staircase.
For the second trip, I coordinated a small team and shipping a truck and job box full of tools to the island. Wild goats had taken over the property while I was gone to such a degree that cab drivers had a laugh that the king of the goat palace had finally come home when I arrived. Goat palace indeed. Dead goats were littered around the property, and we ended up working with the local wildlife officials to properly take care of the goats. It was a nonstop year of finding my way around, making new friends, restoring, and improving the building to prepare for future hurricanes.
